Background of students

Students in Newfoundland have very little knowledge of Canada’s nuclear history or even basic historical knowledge of the events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While students study the Holocaust as part of the secondary school curriculum, there is very little attention given to the events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, such that the average first through fourth year student at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, when asked in the three English classes I was teaching in the winter of 2019 for what they knew about nuclear weapons and energy, had little to no knowledge of atomic history. As one student wrote in an in-class response to questions about prior knowledge of nuclear history, “Throughout high school, I was never taught about Hiroshima or any of the events that took place involving the devastation.”
